Vintage One-knob fuzz

The fuzz circuit we designed is inspired by classic one-knob English fuzz pedals of times gone by producing a rich silicon transistor based sound that combines features of both the Tonebender* and Fuzz Face*. The “Molt” knob controls volume, providing more bite and grit as you turn it up. Lowering the knob gives a thick, crunchy tone. Being silicon-based, it doesn't clean up well if you reduce the guitar volume, but reducing guitar volume and increasing fuzz can indeed yield a strong crunch. This fuzz works well with slightly overdriven amps and makes friends with other distortion pedals easily. It produces clear, full tones without losing low-end, making it versatile for solos and heavy chords.

Germanium Boost

What pairs well with this fuzz? A boost that not only cuts through the mix but also tidies up feral one-knobbers when asked and adds treble or bass as needed. A blue germanium blooded Rangemaster-inspired circuit was essential; going beyond a basic treble booster, it drives tubes into overdrive, achieves valve saturation at lower volumes, and serves as a versatile full-range booster. In addition, the Cockatrice Boost has the ability to enliven weak pickups, making them warmer, dynamic, and fuller.

With the wide range of the “Preen” control, you can achieve from treble to bass boost, making it compatible with both single-coil and humbucking pickups of various output and gain levels. Additionally, when pushed to its limits, the circuit can produce a noteworthy fuzz effect on its own. This design features military-grade germanium transistors that have been meticulously selected, tested, and hand-biased to yield a bold, clear, and dynamic tone, complete with ample sustain.
